Brewers' Woodruff out for wild-card series with shoulder injury

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff will miss the club’s wild-card series against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a shoulder injury.

“His availability for the postseason is up in the air at this point,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Monday, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Woodruff missed nearly four months of action this season with a subscapular strain in his throwing shoulder.

Brandon Woodruff looked as good as ever since returning from the IL before he took the mound in Miami on Sept. 23. He had a 2.13 ERA over eight starts, including a complete game shutout.

Then, in Miami, his velocity was down. “That’s when it popped up again,” Counsell said.

“It sucked, man,” Woodruff said of finding out about the injury, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. “We’ve got a good clubhouse, and I want to be a part of that.”

The 30-year-old was effective when healthy in 2023, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.28 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts across 67 innings.

The Brewers could turn to veteran left-hander Wade Miley to take Woodruff’s place in the postseason rotation. Miley went 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts during the regular season.
