Cashman rues 'disaster of a season' for Yankees

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has been left frustrated and disappointed by his club’s performance in 2023.

“It’s been a disaster of a season,” Cashman said Wednesday, according to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. “We’re embarrassed by it.”

The Yankees have lost nine straight games for the first time since 1982 and entered play Wednesday 10 games back of a wild-card spot in the American League.

New York hasn’t finished a season with a losing record since 1992, and Cashman knows the team has a lot to figure out moving forward.

“This is not something we’re accustomed to or used to,” Cashman said, according to YES Network. “I think there’s definitely going to be a lot of internal assessments going on.”

The Yankees will look to avoid a 10th straight loss for the first time since 1913 when they continue a series with the Washington Nationals at Yankee Stadium.

New York has just a 0.2% chance to qualify for the postseason, according to FanGraphs. The Yankees haven’t missed the playoffs since 2016.

“I don’t think there’s anyone on this planet that felt that the New York Yankees as constructed leaving spring training wasn’t a playoff-contending team,” Cashman said, according to NJ Advance Media’s Max Goodman. “Shit happens. … We have a mess on our hands.”

Cashman has been the team’s general manager since 1998 but knows a season like this will raise questions about his job security.

“I think we’re all going to be evaluated,” Cashman said, according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. “You’re going to look at every aspect of the operation because that’s what you have to do under these circumstances, and then that takes us where it takes us. Nobody’s happy here. We’re better than this, but it’s not played better than this, and we’ll see. Stay tuned.”
