D-Backs promoting top prospect Lawlar

The Arizona Diamondbacks are promoting top prospect Jordan Lawlar, manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday.

Lovullo added that Lawlar will join the team Thursday before a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

The 21-year-old shortstop is the No. 10-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.

Veteran infielder Nick Ahmed was designated for assignment in a corresponding move, according to Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro.

Arizona drafted Lawlar sixth overall in 2021. He accrued a .291/.390/.503 slash line with 36 homers and 76 stolen bases over a combined 207 minor-league games.

Lawlar went deep 20 times with 26 steals and an .874 OPS over 105 contests between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

The Diamondbacks sit half a game out of the NL’s final wild-card spot after beating the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
