Dodgers’ Buehler won’t return in 2023

Dodgers' Buehler won't return in 2023

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler won’t return to the club this season, the team announced Friday.

Buehler is rehabbing after undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. The 29-year-old made his first appearance at Triple-A last week, striking out two over two scoreless innings.

“My goal since last year has been to return to a major-league mound this season,” Buehler said in a statement. “After many considerations with my doctor, the Dodgers’ front office, training staff, and my family, we concluded that waiting until next season is the right course of action.”

The Dodgers are currently leaning on three rookie pitchers in the rotation. The club is navigating injuries to Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Buehler, as well as the recent placement of left-hander Julio Urías on indefinite administrative leave.

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to help this team go after a title in the 2023 postseason, but I look forward to returning fully healthy in 2024 and bringing another World Series to L.A.,” Buehler said.

Buehler will be in his final season under team control next year. The two-time All-Star owns a career 46-16 record with a sparkling 3.02 ERA and 690 strikeouts across 638 1/3 innings over six seasons with the Dodgers.
