Dodgers’ Roberts ‘surprised’ by sign-stealing comments from Padres’ Lugo

Dodgers' Roberts 'surprised' by sign-stealing comments from Padres' Lugo

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was “surprised” by San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo‘s sign-stealing accusations following his team’s 13-7 victory over their division rivals Monday, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

“Sounds like an excuse,” Roberts added.

The Padres pitcher said he felt like the Dodgers were relaying signs to hitters from second base after he reviewed postgame video footage.

“I don’t think that was the case – and if it were, that’s gamesmanship,” Roberts said.

“Yeah, a couple guys were talking about it (Tuesday). Given the respect I have for him from the other side, it just makes it a little surprising.”

Lugo pitched three clean innings before a detrimental fourth frame in which he allowed eight earned runs. The Dodgers had seven consecutive hitters reach base in the inning, including a grand slam from Mookie Betts.

This isn’t the first time someone’s accused the Dodgers of sign-stealing. Roberts said this past spring that MLB investigated his team in 2018 for using sign-stealing technology. The league cleared Los Angeles of any wrongdoing.

The Dodgers were also accused of relaying signs from second base by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 and by Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach Brent Strom and Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara in 2022, according to Ardaya.
