John Mozeliak: Cardinals are 'not trading' Arenado

St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said the organization won’t trade eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado before the Aug. 1 deadline.

“I have stated we are not trading him, have not asked him to waive his (no-trade clause),” Mozeliak said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold.

“So, at this time, we are working on building future success.”

The Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly discussed a blockbuster trade involving the 10-time Gold Glove winner that would’ve also sent one of Jack Flaherty or Jordan Montgomery to the West Coast.

Arenado opted into the remaining five years of his contract with the Cardinals before the 2023 campaign, showing a commitment to the franchise that traded for him in 2021.

The 32-year-old is having another solid campaign, slashing .284/.332/.517 with 22 home runs and 77 RBIs.

The Cardinals approach the deadline looking like a seller thanks to a 46-59 record, which has them placed fourth in the National League Central.
