Ohtani scratched from Angels' lineup, return from oblique injury delayed

Shohei Ohtani‘s return is delayed again.

The Los Angeles Angels superstar was originally slated to return to the lineup against the Seattle Mariners on Monday but was a late scratch, the team announced.

Mike Moustakas will serve as the designated hitter.

Ohtani has been out since Sept. 3 due to an oblique ailment.

Angels manager Phil Nevin says Ohtani expected to be ready to play Monday but still didn’t feel right after taking some swings in the batting cage, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

The 29-year-old continues to act exclusively as the club’s DH due to a UCL injury that’s preventing him from pitching.

Ohtani is the runaway favorite to win his second AL MVP award over the last three years. The impending free agent has 44 homers with 95 RBIs and a 1.066 OPS over 135 games this season. He also recorded a 3.14 ERA with an 11.4 K/9 over 132 innings (23 starts).
