Orioles claim former All-Star López off waivers from Marlins

Jorge López is heading back to Baltimore.

The Orioles claimed the right-handed reliever off waivers from the Miami Marlins, the club announced Saturday.

Baltimore designated right-hander Logan Gillaspie for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

López spent parts of three seasons with the Orioles, making his only All-Star appearance as the club’s closer in 2022. He was dealt to the Minnesota Twins at last season’s trade deadline for four players, including All-Star reliever Yennier Cano.

López struggled to find his form with the Twins before being dealt to the Marlins on July 26 for reliever Dylan Floro. The 30-year-old didn’t fare much better in Miami, posting a 9.26 ERA with eight strikeouts across 11 2/3 innings.

López will join an Orioles bullpen that’s currently without the services of All-Star closer Félix Bautista. Cano has shifted to the closer’s role in Bautista’s absence after he was placed on the injured list with a UCL issue.
