Phillies’ Realmuto calls D-Backs’ confidence ‘daunting’

Phillies' Realmuto calls D-Backs' confidence 'daunting'

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto isn’t going to take the Arizona Diamondbacks lightly in the National League Championship Series.

“They’re playing a lot like us right now. They’re hot. Their lineup is really deep. … The most daunting thing now is how much confidence they’re playing with,” the catcher said on Sunday, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.

The Phillies enter the NLCS as favorites to advance to their second consecutive World Series, but they’ll square off against a D-Backs club that hasn’t lost in the postseason thus far after entering the playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

There’s also a little extra incentive for the D-Backs to eliminate the favored Phillies after the clubs had a fiery moment earlier this season, featuring a run-in between Realmuto and Arizona skipper Torey Lovullo. The D-Backs manager was upset with the Phillies after star outfielder Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch for the second time in that game.

The two clubs have played each other pretty evenly during their lifetime matchups and will likely use similar top pitching pairings in the first two games of the series.

It’s interesting how similar the top 2 SP for AZ and PHI have been this year, if you look past ERA. The Philly guys are way more famous, but the underlying stuff is not all that different. pic.twitter.com/i1Ft8bhpdW

Arizona has already eliminated two regular-season division winners, sweeping both the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Meanwhile, the Phillies have been impressive in their own right. Philadelphia made easy work of the Miami Marlins in the wild-card round before taking down the 104-win Atlanta Braves in the division series.

The NLCS gets underway on Monday, with the Phillies hosting the D-Backs in Game 1.
