Pirates' McCutchen out for season with partially torn Achilles

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen on the 10-day injured list with a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon, the team announced Wednesday.

McCutchen will be in a walking boot for about six weeks, according to MLB.com’s Justice delos Santos.

The 36-year-old exited Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers due to tightness in his left Achilles.

McCutchen returned to the Pirates on a one-year contract this past offseason after spending parts of his first 10 MLB seasons in Pittsburgh. He is already turning his attention to preparing for his 16th big-league season in 2024.

“I’m not gonna go out like this,” McCutchen said, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I wanna continue to keep playing and push through this, let this heal and be ready to go for 2024.”

The 2013 NL MVP was enjoying a solid season, posting a 115 wRC+ with 12 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a .776 OPS in 112 games for the Pirates.

McCutchen recently eclipsed 2,000 career games and finishes his campaign just one home run shy of 300.
