Rays' McClanahan unlikely to return this season, surgery possible

Tampa Bay Rays ace left-hander Shane McClanahan is unlikely to return to action this season and could undergo surgery, manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

McClanahan has been on the injured list since Aug. 3 with left forearm tightness.

“Shane went and saw the doctor. At this point, probably everything’s on the table, all consideration,” Cash said, according to Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Florida. “There is one more important appointment left with Dr. Meister on Monday. The surgery could be Tommy John, flexor, loose body removal. We don’t know yet.”

McClanahan was authoring another terrific season before suffering the injury, posting an 11-2 record with a 3.29 ERA and 121 strikeouts across 115 innings. He made his second consecutive All-Star Game.

Cash also said that right-hander Tyler Glasnow received an injection in his ailing back and will be shut down for two days, according to Topkin. The Rays are hopeful Glasnow can make a start Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Rays acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Guardians at the trade deadline in an effort to bolster the rotation.

Tampa Bay has been forced to navigate injuries on the pitching staff all year with Drew Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs both undergoing season-ending elbow surgeries.
