Rays place McClanahan on IL, waiting on more testing

The Tampa Bay Rays placed ace left-hander Shane McClanahan on the 15-day injured list, according to a team announcement.

The Rays are in the process of gathering further information about the 26-year-old and plan to provide updates when available.

Tampa doesn’t have a definitive diagnosis on the southpaw, who will undergo additional imaging and seek other options, reports the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin.

McClanahan exited a start against the New York Yankees on Wednesday due to tightness on the outside of his left forearm. He flew back to Tampa for examination and evaluation by team doctors on Thursday.

“I kind of felt it in warmups,” McClanahan said on Wednesday, according to Topkin.

“It just grabbed and wouldn’t let go, and I was like, ‘this is kind of interesting.’ … I’m not going to speculate. I’m not going to make any assumptions. We’re just going to take it day by day and see what comes up.”

The two-time All-Star hasn’t pitched well since returning from a back injury in mid-July, posting a 7.11 ERA in his last four starts.

Tampa Bay is already short-handed in the rotation, with Drew Rasmussen, Jeffrey Springs, and Shane Baz out for the season with injuries.
