Report: Yankees calling up prospects Domínguez, Wells

“The Martian” is ready to land in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees will call up Jasson Domínguez, one of the organization’s top prospects, ahead of Friday’s game in Houston, sources told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Catcher Austin Wells, the Yankees’ No. 8 prospect, per MLB.com, will also be called up on Friday, sources told Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Domínguez and Wells are the latest youngsters to join a Yankees team that’s shifted its focus entirely toward 2024 after a dismal second half knocked them out of playoff contention. New York already called up No. 3 prospect Everson Pereira earlier this month, while rookie Anthony Volpe has been the team’s starting shortstop all year.

Domínguez, 20, heads to the majors after having spent just one week in Triple-A. He torched International League pitching during his brief stint with the RailRiders, going 12-for-27 with a 1.124 OPS and 10 RBIs over eight games at the highest minor-league level. Overall, he’s hit .266/.377/.425 with 15 homers, 76 RBIs, and 39 stolen bases over 117 games split between Scranton and Double-A Somerset.

When Jasson Dominguez makes his debut, he’ll be the youngest Yankee since 2005 when 20-year-old Melky Cabrera played six games.

The Yankees signed Domínguez, the top prospect in his international signing class, out of the Dominican Republic for $5.1 million in 2019. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound switch-hitter has drawn comparisons to the likes of Mickey Mantle and Bo Jackson, among others, thanks to his five-tool skill set.

Wells, 24, was the Yankees’ first-round pick (28th overall) out of Arizona in 2020. He’s rocketed through the farm system during his brief professional career and will reach the majors after playing only 32 games in Triple-A.

Wells is regarded as more of a bat-first catcher, sporting a .243/.335/.447 slash line with 17 homers and 72 RBIs over 95 total games across three minor-league levels this year. He also possesses good speed for a backstop, tallying 39 stolen bases in his professional career.

Defensively, he’s caught only 15 runners stealing this season but has allowed just five passed balls in 559.1 innings behind the plate.
