Showalter 'not happy' after Mets, Alonso extend HBP lead in NL

The New York Mets have been hit by more pitches than any other National League team, and manager Buck Showalter isn’t pleased about it.

Slugger Pete Alonso, who leads the individual HBP ranks in the Senior Circuit with 17, exited Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after being hit in the eighth inning.

“We’re all very frustrated by what’s going on with Pete for a while. He’s leading baseball in hit by pitches,” the veteran skipper said postgame.

“I don’t really want to hear about a product of how they pitch him. You take a ball in the neck. Not happy about it. Not happy at all.”

Buck Showalter was asked about Mets hitters being consistently hit by pitch:

Alonso was removed for a pinch-runner when Los Angeles Angels righty Jose Soriano hit him on the back of the neck with a breaking ball. The Mets first baseman got into it with Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe, prompting a brief benches-clearing delay.

Benches cleared — but no punches thrown — after Pete Alonso is hit near the back of his neck with a José Soriano curveball. Alonso had some words for Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe after the pitch. He was then removed for a pinch-runner.

Alonso’s 17 HBPs trail only Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France, who’s been hit 27 times. The Mets have collectively worn 84 HBPs this season, also behind only the Mariners (91).

Alonso passed concussion protocol and likely won’t require further testing, Showalter said, according to’s Anthony DiComo.
