Story: Bloom's firing 'a shared blame' among Red Sox players, staff

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story was disappointed to learn Chaim Bloom was relieved of his duties as chief baseball officer Thursday and believes the team’s underperformance is to blame.

“He’s a big reason why I came here,” Story said, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

“Nobody cares more than Chaim. And I think it’s tough. It’s kind of a shared blame. We didn’t get the job done on the field. I think if you ask anybody on the team, on the staff, we all kind of feel a shared blame there. At the end of the day, it’s about performing. We just didn’t do that up to what we think that we should.”

Story was Bloom’s biggest free-agent acquisition. His six-year, $140-million contract signed before the 2022 campaign hasn’t paid dividends thus far, with Story appearing in 93 games over the past two seasons. The player he replaced, Xander Bogaerts, left for the San Diego Padres.

Bogaerts wasn’t the only popular player to depart during Bloom’s tenure. Mookie Betts and David Price were dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers in February 2020. Betts played an integral role in the Dodgers winning the 2020 World Series, ranking third in the majors in fWAR since arriving in Los Angeles. The players the Red Sox received in return haven’t had anything close to that impact:

Alex Verdugo

Connor Wong

Jeter Downs

Bloom was let go after four seasons with the organization, which included just one playoff appearance and last-place finishes in 2020 and 2022.

The Red Sox entered Thursday one game ahead of the New York Yankees for fourth place in the AL East.
