Watch: Royals' Isbel hits double directly into Green Monster lightbulb

Kansas City Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel conquered the Green Monster the easy way: by breaking it.

In the second inning of Wednesday’s game at Fenway Park, Isbel ripped a fly ball that turned Boston Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida around. Yoshida, along with just about everyone else, had no idea where the ball was at first – because Isbel’s hit actually flew right into the Monster’s famous scoreboard and got stuck inside one of the “out” lights.

Joe Castiglione is 76 years old, been calling Red Sox games for 41 years, and he just said he’s never seen this before.

Isbel literally hit the light out, leaving a large goose-egg inside the shattered bulb.

Isbel’s million-to-one shot actually did more harm than good for the Royals, as it was dubbed a ground-rule double because it got trapped in the scoreboard. That forced Matt Duffy, who would have scored easily on the play, to return to third base, where he was stranded one batter later.

Kansas City led 1-0 at the time, but the Red Sox squared things up in the bottom of the second on a Triston Casas solo home run.
