White Sox manager Grifol: Poor season 'is on me'

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol blames himself for Chicago’s disappointing 2023 season.

“I am disappointed in our season, and this is on me,” Grifol said Tuesday, according to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine.

“It’s simple. I told everybody we had high expectations, and I was going to lead us where we want to go. It’s all very disappointing, but that doesn’t mean I am going to quit. Just because it’s not working, doesn’t mean I won’t prepare for the next game or series. We are just trying to get better. But I am disappointed.”

The team hired the former Kansas City Royals bench coach before the season to replace Tony La Russa, who retired. Grifol entered the season optimistic that the White Sox would contend after they finished 81-81 and missed the postseason in 2022.

At his introductory press conference in November, the 53-year-old promised to keep the energy high and ensure the team is prepared to win. That’s been difficult for the skipper, with injuries mounting and key players underperforming.

Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez are the only White Sox players with an OPS over .800 for a team that ranks near the bottom of the league in wRC+, on-base percentage, and FanGraphs’ offensive rating. The starting staff also ranks 18th in ERA, while the bullpen sits 24th in win probability added and 27th in fWAR.

“There are a ton of different components, and we will address all of them,” Grifol said. “There will be no stone unturned here when it comes to getting this thing right. We will try to finish the year strong and move into the type of baseball we want to play. There is a culture we want to build that hasn’t happened. Again, that is on me. Nobody else. It’s on me.”

The White Sox are expected to sell at the trade deadline. A number of players, including Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn, and Tim Anderson, are being mentioned in trade rumors.
