Yankees place Rizzo on IL with concussion symptoms

The New York Yankees are placing veteran first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the injured list due to concussion symptoms, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Rizzo’s concussion likely stems from when he collided with San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. during a game in late May, according to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner.

Rizzo said he noticed tiredness of late, mentioned he woke up feeling hungover, and that he was occasionally forgetting how many outs there were during games but attributed it to the grind of the season. Recent testing also showed his reaction time was slower.

“I didn’t just forget how to do this all of a sudden,” he said.

Boone said that Rizzo went through MLB concussion protocol at the time of the injury and passed all testing then. In recent days he has complained of fogginess.

Boone added that the Yankees will evaluate Rizzo on a week-to-week basis, according to Kirschner.

Rizzo has struggled since the beginning of June, slashing just .171/.271/.225 with one home run and nine RBIs across 46 games.

The Yankees are expected to turn to Jake Bauers and DJ LeMahieu at first base in Rizzo’s absence, per Hoch.
